Lake Heron Air
Lake Heron Air's spectacular air strip and base are situated on Lake Heron Station. We are in the heart of the South Island, two hours drive from Christchurch, making for a great day excursion. When you fly with us you're not only getting a stunning flight, you're visiting a fully operational high country station, home to 11,000 Merino sheep and 700 Angus cattle.
This station has been in the Todhunter family for 105 years and has a long history of welcoming guests into the area. The station is now owned by Philip and Anne who have continued this tradition and love to enhance the experience of every guest with their passion for flying and the high country.
This is a "gem of NZ", loved by Kiwis and overseas guests alike.
Meet the Pilot
Nothing beats flying with a local! Locally owned, operated from the heart of the South Island. Lake Heron Air offers stunning flight experiences across New Zealand.
Station owner, Philip Todhunter, is the chief pilot for Lake Heron Air. Philip is a true local with over 35 years of backcountry flying, both in helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. His extensive flying experience has taken him from as far afield as Antarctica and South East Asia but the mountains of New Zealand are his home. He knows the South Island high country like the back of his hand and loves to share its treasures.
"The best pilot for this kind of experience"
"Your knowledge and skill in flying the Southern Alps are so impressive, and sharing the experience with us [was] such a gift. It is your true calling"
